Dark Horse updates Berserk pricing for next year
Based on a tip from a commenter (thanks grapeofdeath) that Dark Horse pricing for Berserk would be going up $5/volume starting next year with Volume 27, I decided to do some inquiring. As it turns out the Dark Horse website simply had a typo, they've since corrected their site, and it does not appear that there will be a price change in the near future for Berserk. I'd say it's a good thing the price doesn't go up since new readers may not be too excited about picking this up when comparing price to many of the other items on the manga shelves.
What do you think? $13.95 too low, too high, just right? Is there a price where you would absolutely stop buying Berserk legitimately?

Originally the manga here in America were $15 back in the day. When they had 2 shelves or so in the stores.
Yeah, now that you mention it, I remember that. I have a number of Battle Angel volumes I picked up at that time, the pages on those books are bigger than the ones used now also.
Given the size of each volume and the quality of the manga itself, I think the price is acceptable. That being said, Darkhorse cannot compete with Shonen Jump, $8 dollars per volume is a steal.
I was not implying Shonen Jump publishes Berserk, just saying in general they have the best manga prices.
Berserk is my life. I would love to be able to buy the volumes. plz help anyone? And I also need info on those awsome contests. I know some of the questions well all of them.

$14 is a good price, what I hate is that most retailers in Canada sell it for $20.

That's too much, but because I love Guts so much and I am hoping he will get his arm and eye back, I will continue to purchase them.
Not a good price, for the same quality in chinese you can get it for 5 dollars a volume.
i rarely find manga that i absolutely MUST purchase, but Berserk is definitely one of these. it's not even a question. the manga and anime are must-owns for me. Even if the price were outrageous, like $25 per vol. or something, i'd be on ebay or craigslist or something trying to find a price i could afford.
@Soulreaver37 - by same quality I guess you mean paper quality. Judging by the fact that even the title is translated differently in chinese versions bothers me greatly. As with many other chinese subtitled things (movies, etc), the translation quality is probably sub par (I swear they just make it up sometimes), and more bothersome than that is the fact that it is EXTREMELY unlikely that the product is actually licensed in any way.
I think the translation quality thing is really just people trying to make easy money, which I don't blame them for. I just have too much respect for Miura and his work at this point to support them. There is of course the off chance that you find a high quality chinese version - I have found them on a few occasions.
Either way we all need our Berserk fix, and it doesn't sound like anyone so far is going to let Dark Horse's price stop them.
@N/A: I have no idea when the next chapter is coming out. Maybe guessing it will be our next contest?
I check younganimal.com frequently, but I haven't seen any updates~ Looks like we'll have to wait and see.
I already have about 4 volumes. Nothing is going to stop me from gettin them all xD
I don't buy them legitimately anyway....so it doesn't matter for me. However the only reason why i don't is because I have other things to buy with the money I can rarely get.....if i had a steady income I'd go out and buy every available volume.
$13.95 isn't too bad but i won't buy and support darkhorse when they take forever to release a volume. I'd rather buy straight from Japan and download a evil translated copy.
I'll buy it until it's done. I want to know the whole story and own it so I can lend it to friends and show them how awesome berserk really is.
Id pay for it AND will, the beautifull Beserk Volumes cant be toped for 5 dollars more. BESERK 4 EVA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nah, I'd pay for it anyway (even if I've already read them scanlated, too.. they need the money). I collected Battle Angel when it first came out, and back then manga was almost impossible to find. It's great that they're easier to find now (although a lot of the ones put out are kind of crap in comparison and I find myself still searching for only a select couple, in a sea of bad).
The artwork in Berserk is simply amazing, and well worth the price!
Sorry about that. It was like that for about two weeks, on both the Dark Horse site and Things From Another World. Both have been fix now.
I'd still buy it, but probably only through TFAW web page since at the time of the typo, the discount would have made each about $15.

If it were impossible for me to get Berserk through other means, (IE Berserk and the entire Internet) Then I would say I would buy it all. heck I'd pay $20 a CHAPTER if it were necessary. (looks at the number of chapters and cringes) But overall, Berserk is simply the best manga I've ever read, and when we have superb translators like EG, all that's left to do is set back and wait on Miura.
i went to taiwan, picked up shonen jump titles at 3 bucks american. I went to the seinen section and bought stuff like gantz for 4 bucks. Granted the books aren;t vary big, maybe 6 in by 8 in big, its still a steal. I never bought american so i can't compare the quality though, and its also in chinese, but better reason to learn a foreign language! My motto, never buy american if you can get it cheaply on your vacation for cheap
Dark Horse's prices always set me off from buying their products directly. For example, I purchase their latest Conan series via Amazon.com because the price is at least 5 dollars cheaper (Dark Horse sells them for around $17-18). I can understand why DK would charge so much for that particular Conan series (everything is in color), but not Berserk. Berserk is in black and white.
I remember back in the day when manga hadn't quite yet reached its present mainstream status. A volume of Inuyasha or Ranma would cost $20 bucks (after taxes). I didn't buy them much. Now they're a steal at eight bucks a pop. Since manga is popular now, why not charge $8-10 bucks for Berserk as well?
I have the entire published collection from Japan. $5 per volume. Yeah, I think $13.97 is too much. $10. That's the sweet spot in the US and makes sure the translators get paid.
Realistically I think 13.95 is way too high. Though manga is directed more towards we adults, it is teenagers that probably make up the majority of sales. And not alot of teens have jobs that pay worth a damn. And it's even worse if they are in college and can barely work any hours to go with it. Now 9-10 was the perfect price, and yes I understand that everything is being bloody inflated, but still 14 bucks to read my favorite manga is just ridiculous, so I'll continue d/ling them online.

I want chapter 298 to come out so bad, and considering its only one chapter that I FIEND for, I would donate organs for the next darkhorse translation...organs. its 10 chapters give or take, in a book, perfectly translated with sound effects. I mean by the time they make it to elfhelm I will be 50 and they are on a boat to freaking elfhelm.. Miuras gunna die before anything happens (sorry for my aggression) . realistically I would donate a kidney for all the chapters until the end (volumes 33-100 given to me from the future) I ehh RAAHHH! need berserk darkhose hate take so long why need brkerik ahahhahhhhh RAAAHHHH! LOL yeah I think we all feel that way Zodd, still realistically speaking with the way things cost right now, I still think that to pay nearly 15 bucks for any manga is ridiculous.
And yes I do hope that Miura hurries his ass up a bit, I mean I owe the man plenty of respect, but I'm already half way to 50 and I need to see how this damn manga ends!!! I swear I'll be so pissed if Miura drops before the manga is over!
SO yeah basically this whole wait for a new berserk chapter us getting ridiculous. All the other mangas aRE flying through and ending their stories but no. But I do agree, that all other manga are coming out every week or at least bi-weekly, meanwhle we loyal fans have to wait almost bi or tri-monthly, the wait really sux...I'll never see Elfhelm lol.

I can agree with alot that many of you have mentioned, it's nerve racking, and can drive many of us crazy having to wait for months at a time for just one release of any Berserk manga, yet those who still stand show how much they are still true berserk fanatics, now would I pay any kind of high prices just to get my hands on any of Miura's berserk work? Absolutely yes I'd do anything I could.

I fall into the category of readers that had been following the series long before anything was officially released in America. Can't usually wait for the official release since it takes American companies too long to catch up to what's coming out in Japan. If they released these series faster in America, the price tag wouldn't bother me.
-Reply to Bigsword- Now that I can agree, I guess it wouldn't be bad at all to pay 12-14 bucks if it was coming out at a faster rate, but with how slow it's going, I seriously just want to d/l the japanese version first, and say screw the american version.
Good argument but there are alot of people who depend on the american versions.
Also, the japanese need to start giving us more of their products because europe and mostly america sufferes from deprrovation of quality games and books that only show up in japan. Damn it, maybe if the americans got the things the japanese have, they would make more money because there would be more variety for fans to choose from. It would be so much bigger. People who usually aren't into manga and video games or anime might get hooked and start buying such products because of some of the different games that the japanese only sell to the JAPANESE >_< life wtf people wtf

@BerserkBerserk - Yeah, that's pretty much what folks are looking for. It's been more than 3 months since the last chapter if I remember correctly. It's just far too long... hopefully Miura will keep up with the updates for a while once he picks it back up. Sometimes there are free booze, well, free manga. You guys can check out the forums also.

I heard that Miura keeps himself secluded in an old house away from the "world". I hear he keeps in contact with a few people via the internet, and that the publishing companies take a check in on him every once in a while.

Personally, I think it's too high. They sell for like $5-$6 bucks in Japan. So essentially they're charging an additional $8-$9 for them to translate it? Now I know they need money, but considering that EG does the same thing for FREE, in their spare time, it seems kinda ridiculous.
I'll still buy it, because Berserk is awesome. I'll just buy it slower, and with a good portion of the volumes coming from eBay.
Tbh, you guys are lucky. To buy berserk here in norway i have to buy from a specialist shop. I have to pay 23$ for each volume. But a increase in price would require an increase in price in norway as well.

In the United States, they should publish them concurrent with the series in Japan and sell them for $9.95. It is more adult and the market is a lot smaller then a Naruto, but the fan base is very loyal. They can then capitalize on merchandise and or limited editions. Maybe, the first 10 volumes should be more in expensive to get people into them. Once your in, it is hard not to keep reading. If you are reading this Gombos, then consider this model.
