Not long ago Carlos contacted me about a Berserk RPG he made. I’ve only played an hour or so, but it plays nicely so far. I don’t really have the system requirements on this, but it is working fine on my Windows XP machine. Read below for his description.
In this game you play as Guts, a mercenary, one of the many hired to kill Bazuso, your companion is a annoying fairy Puck.

Well, I should probably say something like this: The software is not made by TheBlackswordsman.com, do not hold us responsible if you encounter any problems.
Besides the odd grammar, I liked the game. Not really very Berserk, having puck with you while fighting Basuzo, but hey it worked.
A little weird going through an RPG with Berserk as the theme, at least using Guts as the main character. I could see it working really well going through as some nameless member of the band of the hawk though, that might make quite a bit of money, especially if you styled it somewhat like a Fire Emblem Game. Oh geeze.
I can honestly say though, I had a lot of fun the hour and a half I spent on it. Need that second chapter, eh?
Why won’t I try this? Those screen shots look like junk. He has no mapping skill at all. That’s basically all I’m judging it on. It should be mentioned he used RPG Maker VX, which has extremely simplified mapping tools. I don’t see an excuse for it looking so bad!
Chapter 2 comes out tomorrow.
Breadfan I did not spent that much time on mapping in that particular map, this is a hobby, not for profit so I don’t do it for a living.
Carlos, I understand that it’s a hobby. I’ve been RPG making for years. I just wonder if you don’t give a shit about standards, how is it that anyone else can? A plot you didn’t write, a program you didn’t code, maps you didn’t map. :/ Don’t let me put you off though. You’ll get a pat on the back from anyone who doesn’t know enough. I don’t care about how much time you spend on it than you knowing how it’s supposed to be done first.*bitter*

i loved the game, its great. i must say im impressed, music battle and like that. its a greate game.
Don’t be upset. Nobody can be good right away. As I said lots of people will enjoy the game, a few peole like me won’t because I’m programed into a mindset about RM games. If you’ve been exposed to certain standards for a long enough time, some attempts become unacceptable.
Yeah I’ve made a couple of Berserk games, a first person one, as well as several other anime games. I’m not ever satisfied with them, I didn’t expect you to be with yours either but you seem to be.

I find the amount of negativity towards the fan made stuff I’ve posted recently… surprising! First that fan movie, and now this. Anyways, I hope this won’t stop submissions by the folks that like Berserk and like contributing their time and effort.

You guys didn’t understand me. I might hve sounded a bit rude earlier, but it was an oppinion I have. You wouldn’t have gotten any kind words in serious RM comunities, which I speak on behalf of. It’s honesty folks, when I say a game like this is a stone in the ocean of fan games. You really don’t have to reach out and many fan games don’t get any attention, a fraction of what they deserve. Being realistic, this is on the front page, not in the cozy community grounds. You’re exposed to the rest of the internet. You have to expect critisism as just much as you expect praise. We can’t have you floating away now with that balloon head.

I can understand where Breadfan is coming from, and a little critique is good, but you didn’t critique. You just said it was bad, give him pointers to make it better.

@Odin FInal: If you are doing that, you don’t understand how derogitory that is to the RM community. I’m not joking when I say anybody here could do as good a job, the problem you all have is just a lack of understanding of the program he used. It’s practically a colour by numbers maker, and not to mention it’s his *first* game which he’s worked on for only weeks.
I’m passionate about this kind of stuff, I’m just trying to make out that this isn’t the right game to put on a pedistol. I don’t want to upset carlos, I just don’t want anybody here to be duped either.

1. You don’t know the RM community. It’s thriving, hundreds and hundreds of hard working, dedicated people. Not just the RM community, Indie and development all over the world. You aren’t qualified enough to say that weeks to make a game in a program like this is a long time. I can spend longer on individual game systems, or a 5 minute cutscene.
2. I absolutely agree. When I heard this was carlos’ first game, I retracted from critisising his RM abilities. I wish him luck and success further on. If he continues, as in every case, he’ll look back at this and cringe. It’s absolutely not the right showcase for him, this website, or the RM community. If he’s looking for constructive critism he’ll know the place to go. If he’s looking for fame, get a website like this to spotlight him eh, Isn’t that how it works?
A game like this, (first one made with little experience) 5-10 of these whizz by everyday. Most of them fan games, few of them inspired. Pardon me if I sound synical, but the ‘effort’ he put in isn’t something we should be thankfull for, he is afterall working for his own enjoyment and not for ours. Encourage it of course, but don’t endorse him for it. There are people who have already made a journey of a thousand miles, he’ll never get there if all he needs are a few steps to get where he wants he wants to be.

First off, saying “Let’s see you do better” is not a valid response to criticism. One does not have to be an expert in a subject to say that it’s bad, and seeing as Breadfan is already experienced in the subject, that makes him a person to listen to.
And are you lot saying that you’ve never criticized something? A movie, a show, a book, nothing that you haven’t done yourself? I find it highly unlikely. And by that logic, if a person shouldn’t criticize something, they shouldn’t praise it either. Because if a person can’t tell what’s bad, they shouldn’t be able to tell what’s good either. If you think he was rude or could’ve been more constructive, that’s a valid complaint. But not “well you aren’t doing one!”
As for the game itself, I enjoyed the idea, but the game was brought down by several flaws. The main one is that random encounters happen far too often and make the game boring. Given how many enemies you can visibly see on the screen, there shouldn’t need to be a random encounter every five steps, and that’s not much of an exaggeration. As said, the game is in desperate need of some proofreading. It also would’ve been nice to get some backstory on how Guts met Puck before he joined the Band of the Hawk.

act 3 does not have random battles. I did not make it every five steps, in average its like 15 in some places, it is an algorithm.
if you don’t like something there are some ways to criticize it other than calling it junk or offending the creators skill. especially, when you consider it was made purely for the sake of fun/learning and he isn’t charging you for it.
as for me, i do games for living, and i find this one pretty good, given the expectations i had.
of course i was not expecting an assassin’s creed level game

Please victorvedder, don’t tell me what I should have said. I didn’t want to give him feedback or rub his ego in any way. I was just giving a direct answer to the question ‘if you’re not going to play this, why the fuck not?’. I am absolutely not supportive of people like carlos submitting thier games to websites like this, especially not before he knows how to use the program yet. These kinds of spaces should be reserved and that’s why I say there’s no excuse for the screenshots being so awful, in all the games I’ve seen I’ve never seen it done so poorly even by people who will freely admit they have no mapping skill. I agree 100% I love Berserk too much to see crap like this made. I say EPIC FAIL. The guy who made this game seems to not know much of anything. Especialy, since it looks more like a rip off of old school Zelda. Just with more colors.

I belive he thinks it should be placed in the fourums with a “under development/testing/suggestions” type of thing. First, thank you for this site, I have been a Berserk fan since 2000 and I love the manga, anime, games and music.
Second about this game, good work i have not played it but it looks like whoever made it, put some time and effort into it, so I always praise work that other people do.

Are you guys blind? Just look at the game for one second. You dont need to know how to make RPG’s or even how to use the program to see how appauling the game is. My advice to you mate is dont show things off until you know its good. You havent even learnt how to do anything and yet here you are submitting it. You must have spent 10 minutes on it at best. Please I everyone thats commented go and research what it is he is doing before uneducated positive feedback. Its absolute junk. Type in ‘RPG Maker XP Map Tutorials’ if this guy had followed just one of them it wouldnt look like it came from a cat walking across his keyboard.
