Book Description
“The once unbeatable Band of the Hawk is smashed, and their former leader, Griffith, has made an unholy pact with the demon lords of the Godhand, sacrificing his former troops to resurrect his crippled body and ascend to stand in power beside these profane gods. The Invocation of Doom has unleashed a plague of unspeakable horrors upon the earth, and the first battle not only shatters the Hawks, but the hand of their champion, Guts, and the mind of their captain and Guts’ lover, Casca. And while time may heal some of Guts’ wounds, it will not heal his desire for vengeance. And his discovery of a gigantic, dragon-slaying sword might be just the ticket to deal out some king-sized payback! Also included in this volume: “Berserk Prototype,” the very first Berserk story, created during Kentaro Miura’s college days as his audition that sold the series!”
Review
As for this issue, we’ve got a solid cover depicting Guts in full battle gear (when is he not in battle gear?). This issue follows up with Guts, Casca, Rickert, and crew just after the Skeleton Knight saves them from Godhand. There are many good scenes in this issue, my favorite part was “Berserk : The Prototype”
Miura’s prototype, pushing nearly 20 years old at this point, shows no signs of aging whatsoever. It is interesting to see Guts at such an early stage, the crossbow is not attached to his arm, he wears an eye patch, and he’s actually pretty funny. The dialog and facial expressions of Guts were much more light-hearted than the Guts we know.
In this issue you will see the following:
- Casca giving birth to a hideous demon
- Guts discovering the Dragon-Slayer and using it to slice huge demons in half
- Guts getting his canon arm
- Guts using a young kid as bait
- Guts punching a mouth-full of teeth out of a guy
Final Score: 5 of 5 stars
